Born in Biloxi in 1930, Ramon Gutierrez was the third son of Lee Paul Gutierrez and Katherine Slay Gutierrez. A graduate of Notre Dame High School and later University of Notre Dame, he was destined to be a businessman with his ventures including seafood.
With his early experience in the family business, “Biloxi Freezing Company”, “Ziggy” as he was called by family and friends, would venture into other areas of wholesale foods. In 1986, the family business would be sold to “International Seafood Traders”, but ultimately, Ziggy would venture back into the icehouse and processing of seafood when he and his brother Lee “Pedro” Gutierrez, would purchase back the family business in 1993 naming it Biloxi Freezing and Processing.
Ramon was married to Mildred “Millie” Waggoner of Ellisville, Mississippi and together they bore two children. He was very active in his church, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, and in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His entrepreneurial endeavors also included the “Key Club” and “Creole Room” on Biloxi’s Strip, the “3 R Tomato Company”, “M&G Wholesale Co.”, and “Tidewater Sales Co.” With his heritage in seafood, Ziggy Gutierrez was well suited for his role as Secretary of the Port Commission, which he served for many years before his passing in 2009.
